Fall TV First Impressions : Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The Show: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Time: Tuesdays 20:00/19:00c on ABC
Premise: Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) is mysteriously alive again after the events of that little movie known as The Avengers. He assembles his own team of everyday agents and scientists to fight the good fight. Not all heroes are super but they are rather attractive.
Pros: Fast paced, fun and really entertaining. Yeah entertaining shows which are done well are actually a rare best, I mean I love my quality dramas like Breaking Bad and Homeland but sometimes a break from that much intensity is needed. Agents of SHIELD provides that in great action scenes and fun dialogue. J August Richards really needs to reoccur or become a regular as I loved his character arc. Agent Coulson is naturally the main character I immediately felt a connection to but I really look forward to finding out more about Melinda May and the rest of the gang.
Despite some previews from critics picking out Chloe Bennet and Brett Dalton as not being strong actors I actually grew to like them both by the end of the episode. The Science geeks may be a little too much for some but they are the kind of characters I tend to like.
Cons: So a few of the lines didn’t really land (the cosplay bit especially) but there wasn’t anything that I hated outright. Even if it was occasionally cheesy it was more fun cheese than groan worthy. I hope the show isn’t too procedural or if it is it spends enough time developing the characters to make it worthwhile.
Overall: Let’s face it I am incredibly biased when it comes to this show as both a Whedon and Marvel Cinematic Universe fan. The pilot is good not fantastic but solid and all the ingredients are there for something much more interesting; mysterious bad guys, a secret being kept from Coulson and a bunch of characters that we will get to know over the course of the series. It’s best not to think of this as a Whedon show or a Marvel movie as it is trying to do its own thing and hopefully that will work creatively and in terms of ratings.
Will I watch it again: Absolutely this has been on my watch list since it was announced last year. Unless something drastic happens and it becomes unwatchable I’m in for hopefully the long haul.
