Winter TV First Impressions : True Detective
The Show: True Detective
Time: Sundays on HBO
Premise: The story of detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana.
Pros: One episode in and McConaughey and Harrelson are simply phenomenal in their roles. It is really hard not to be drawn into their world both in the present day interview scenes and the flashbacks to 1995. Immediately I want to know what happened between them, if Rust is the murderer as it looks like the present day detectives think and if not then who is. The directing is stunning and adds to the intense atmosphere.
Cons: Maybe the show is just a little bit too bleak, just a tad, a couple of funny moments wouldn’t go amiss but if it chooses to be this tense slow burning drama then I am fine with that.
Overall: There has been a whole lot of hype surrounding True Detective and it is well deserved. The most interesting thing to me is that the case will be resolved by the end of the season and if season 2 happens we get a whole new mystery to solve and new cast to enjoy, having that kind of contained story makes the slow burn feel worth it because you know its building up to something come season finale time.
Will I watch it again: I want to go to HBO offices and steal all future episodes right about now.
